What problem causes pain in the ball of the foot?

When walking in flats, a woman's foot works as a springboard. All of the elements, heel, arch, forefoot and toes, work together to absorb pressure and to transfer and release energy that will propel her forward.

When stepping into a pair of high heels shoes, however, the bones of the foot realign into a vertical position. To maintain balance and still be able to walk, several things occur.

The toes flatten and become immobilized, and the natural arch becomes stiff. That means that there's no energy release to spring the foot forward. Hips and thighs, then, have to compensate by walking harder. This increases the pressure of the step by 30 percent, and with the heel elevated, the ball of the foot is left alone to absorb it all.

This area, just below the toes, was not build for such trauma, so women often experience a 'burning pain' in the ball of the foot. To add insult to injury, the vertical alignment of the foot causes shock from each step to travel up the length of the leg, jarring knees and hips to cause long-term aches and pain.
