A bunion is a progressive condition which begins with the big toe slowly being forced to move towards the smaller toes. Over many years the angle of the big toe is changed, which causes the distinctive bump on the side of the foot, this bump is commonly added to by additional bone formation.
Pressure from shoes and the misalignment of the big toe can cause thickening of the skin and the tissues underneath, which in turn causes the joint at the base of the big toe to become swollen and painful. A bunion can also develop on the join of the little toe.

Certain foot types are more prone to developing bunions, however, they are most common in women who wear tight fitting shoes. Although tight fitting shoes do not actually cause the bunion, they can make the condition worse.
Sufferers may change the way that they walk to help alleviate the pain, however, this can cause additional problems such as back pain, leg pain, calloused skin and blisters.
